PPWR Sets 35 Percent Recycled Plastic Floor and Mandatory Sort Symbols for All EU Supplement Jars

Supplement brands must transition to packaging with 35 percent recycled content and standardized sorting symbols by January to avoid market withdrawal.

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) transition period is closing, forcing a hard shift in procurement for supplement brands using HDPE and PET jars. All plastic packaging placed on the EU market must now meet minimum recycled content thresholds and feature harmonized sorting icons to facilitate circularity.

Mandatory Recycled Content Thresholds

Starting today, procurement managers must ensure all new production runs of plastic supplement containers comply with the 35 percent recycled content floor. This applies to PET jars typically used for protein powders and HDPE bottles for capsules. Supply of food-grade rPET is tightening, with prices currently sitting at 1.95 EUR per kg, a 15 percent premium over virgin resin.

  • Ensure your supplier provides EN 15343 certification for recycled content traceability.
  • Transition away from opaque black plastics that fail NIR sorting at recycling centers.
  • Budget for a 0.12 EUR per unit increase in container costs due to rPET premiums.

Standardized Labeling and Sorting Symbols

National sorting symbols like the French Triman or Italian environmental labeling are being superseded by the new EU harmonized pictograms. These symbols must be printed directly on the primary label. If you are launching new SKUs in Q4, do not print old label designs; you will be forced to over-sticker by January, which adds 0.08 EUR per unit in manual labor costs at the warehouse.

Formulators should also note that the ratio of label weight to container weight is under scrutiny. Shrink sleeves that cover more than 60 percent of the bottle surface are now penalized under new EPR fee structures in Germany and Spain. Switching to pressure-sensitive paper labels is the most cost-effective way to maintain compliance and reduce extended producer responsibility taxes.
