GMP Audits Reveal 18 Percent Failure Rate in Ethylene Oxide Testing for Psyllium and Guar Gum

Internal audit data from the last quarter shows a sharp rise in non-compliance findings related to raw material verification for thickening agents and high-fiber powders. Third-party auditors are no longer accepting supplier COAs as sufficient proof of purity for ingredients like Psyllium Husk and Guar Gum.

The 18 Percent Failure Pattern

The pattern involves a failure to test for Ethylene Oxide (EtO) at the point of entry into the EU manufacturing facility. Even when suppliers provide clean reports, 18 percent of spot tests conducted during audits returned residues above the 0.01 mg per kg limit defined in Regulation EU 2023/915.

Standard GC-MS/MS testing for EtO currently costs between 140 EUR and 190 EUR per sample across major European labs. While this adds 0.20 EUR to 0.45 EUR per kg to your raw material cost, it is significantly cheaper than a product recall or a suspended GMP certificate.

Strategic Procurement Advice

If you are procuring fibers for Q4 production, do not rely on a global supplier COA dated more than 30 days prior to shipment. Require your contract manufacturer to hold 500g of every batch for independent domestic testing before blending. If your manufacturer refuses to facilitate this, they are putting your brand at risk of a forced market withdrawal under the General Food Law.
