EFSA Mandates New Warning Labels and 800mg Hard Limit for Green Tea EGCG Extracts
Brands must update labels for green tea extracts by October to include liver toxicity warnings and cap EGCG at 800mg per day.
EFSA has finalized its safety assessment on green tea catechins, specifically targeting epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This ruling ends the grace period for brands selling high dose thermogenic products across the EU market.
New Formulation and Labeling Requirements
The regulation sets a maximum daily intake of 800mg for EGCG from food supplements. Any product exceeding this limit is now prohibited for sale. Furthermore, labels must include specific cautionary statements regarding liver health and consumption with other green tea products.
- Mandatory warning: Do not consume if you have liver problems.
- Prohibition of intake on an empty stomach.
- Required disclosure of EGCG content in mg per serving.
- Total daily dose must fall strictly below the 800mg threshold.
Procurement and Sourcing Impact
Current 95 percent EGCG extracts priced at 45 EUR per kg are seeing a demand shift toward 50 percent extracts. Lower concentration extracts allow for better volume in capsules while staying under the new safety cap. If you are formulating fat burners for a Q4 launch, you should recalculate your active levels immediately to avoid stock seizures at the border.
Italian and French authorities have already indicated they will begin retail inspections starting November 2026. If you have existing inventory of 800mg plus dosages, plan a clearance strategy now or face mandatory destruction of goods.
