The European Food Safety Authority has published its final safety assessment on berberine-containing botanicals, setting a strict daily upper limit that disrupts most blood glucose support formulations currently on the market.

New Safety Thresholds and Restrictions

The ruling limits total daily berberine intake to 150mg. This decision stems from data showing significant inhibition of CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 enzymes at higher doses, which creates high risks for drug-nutrient interactions. Formulations using Berberis aristata or Berberis vulgaris standardized to 97 percent purity are the primary targets.
