Ashwagandha sourcing in 2026.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is the most-bought adaptogen in the EU and US. Sourcing decisions come down to one thing: branded clinically-studied extract, or generic standardised extract. Here's how to choose.

Branded extracts at a glance

When branded is worth it

If your positioning depends on "clinically studied" claims, sleep, cortisol, strength, you need a branded extract because the human RCTs were run on those specific extracts. Generic 5% withanolides can't borrow that evidence. If you're a value-tier brand and the label just lists "ashwagandha extract 300 mg (5% withanolides)", generic is fine and 3–4x cheaper.

What to test for

EU import logistics

Ashwagandha is not a novel food (long pre-1997 use). Import as a food ingredient via a CHED-D at the EU border. Duty is generally 0%, VAT applies. Most EU CMOs prefer to receive material from authorised EU stocking distributors (faster lead time, EU paperwork ready) rather than direct from India.
